Industry news nuggets from the world of DTC and beyond...

Miss-gone-under ~ the fast-fashion retailer, who announced they were going under a week or so ago, has been brought out of administration by Frasers Group. It looks like their behind the scenes documentary series didn’t translate into a P&L able to withstand the challenges of 2022. Is this an opportunity for Mike and co to turn the brand into the world’s most progressive online retailer? Here’s hoping 🤞

Victoria’s Marketplace ~ the world’s largest lingerie company continues its rebirth with a marketplace dominated by women-led brands. I totally get these guys are trying to turn their image around, however, it’s really hard not to feel that this is just woke-washing. In either case, I’m curious to see how this plays out from the marketplace vendor and consumer perspective.

Doctor Depop ~ the OG punk shoe of choice, Dr Martens, is partnering with Depop to enter the resale market. Although it would have been cool to see them spin out their own platform with something like Trove, this is a sick idea and a win-win for both brands.

In other music and Dr Marten affiliated news, Danny Boyle is bringing the Sex Pistol's story to life on Disney Plus. As a former punk, I recommend you forget the Sex Pistols and wrap your ears around The Damned - they are categorically the original and the best.

Bolted ~ Bolt, not Bolt, has announced layoffs. The current macroeconomic climate has been named as the primary driver for their structural change. However, it’s curious to see that their biggest client, Forever 21, is suing them. So how much of their decision was based on inflation, supply chain issues, lower consumer sentiment etc versus the lawsuit? Eyes defo on this one 👀

Beyond Me ~ Beyond Meat has appointed Kim Kardashian as their first Chief Taste Consultant. Not sure what to make of this one. Is Kim’s palate so sophisticated that she is the natural choice for their first CTC? Or, is this just a load of meat-free bull shit 🤔

Neumann! ~ he’s back and this time he’s here to elevate the world’s ReFi consciousness. Not only that but a16z are leading the round and they are clearly heading into the crypto winter decked out in shorts, thongs (that’s Australian for flip flops) and a Hot Tuna tank top.

If the fact that a scallywag like Neumann can resurrect himself with $70m to add to the Web3 swamp makes you a little perplexed then I suggest you check out web2boomer - it is the most intelligent and acerbic critique of Web3 on the current internet.

And finally…

Apple has just announced a Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) feature that will compete with the likes of Affirm, Klarna, PayPal etc. Very interesting timing given some of the challenges (regulatory and business) BNPL companies are facing right now. Apple also announced a tracking feature powered by Shopify.
