NEWS NUGGETS 🐓 A round-up of the most interesting DTC (and beyond) news from the past two weeks…Shopify LayoffsShopify announced it was laying off around 10% of its workforce with the cuts mainly impacting recruiting, support, sales and “over-specialized and duplicate roles”. The reasons seemed to be pretty simple. Shopify bet that there would be a permanent shift to eCommerce and hired accordingly. This bet didn’t payoff and therefore they had over-hired. I totally get that ambitious companies need to make bold predictions, and I also think there are major unforeseen externalities (war, inflation etc) at play here, but I do find it curious that what has happened (a return to all things IRL and therefore drop in online everything)...

NEWS NUGGETS 🐓 Industry news nuggets from the world of DTC and beyond... Creators Unite The team behind Parade World have just launched the world’s first marketplace for creators - Moetic. These guys have a pretty serious pedigree when it comes to marketplaces so it’s super cool to see them apply this to the creator economy (currently worth $104.2 billion and growing) and take on the likes of TikTok’s seller programme. High Zalando The big dog German e-tailer, Zalando, has taken a majority stake in Highsnobiety. The business reasoning seems to be that Highsnobiety will make Zalando cooler by offering “cultural relevance and insight” consulting services, whilst Zalando’s eComm/tech muscle will help Highsnobiety scale. I’m intrigued to see how this...

NEWS NUGGETS 🐓 Industry news nuggets from the world of DTC and beyond... Miss-gone-under ~ the fast-fashion retailer, who announced they were going under a week or so ago, has been brought out of administration by Frasers Group. It looks like their behind the scenes documentary series didn’t translate into a P&L able to withstand the challenges of 2022. Is this an opportunity for Mike and co to turn the brand into the world’s most progressive online retailer? Here’s hoping 🤞 Victoria’s Marketplace ~ the world’s largest lingerie company continues its rebirth with a marketplace dominated by women-led brands. I totally get these guys are trying to turn their image around, however, it’s really hard not to feel that this...

NEWS NUGGETS 🐓 Industry news nuggets from the world of DTC and beyond... Find Me An Audience~ Shopify Audiences is a new tool to make it easier for merchants to find customers in a post-iOS 14 world. Mixed reviews on this one. Not sure how effective it will be given how badly Facebook targeting was impacted by Apple’s data changes? Interesting to see this as a Plus only feature. Also, the Shopify v Amazon debate got more interesting with Tobi Lutke suggesting Shopify are ‘happy to integrate’ their buy button whilst Amazon quietly shut down Selz - the DTC platform it acquired in 2021. New Kicks ~ Balenciaga unveiled a new $1850 distressed version of its high topic sneaker. What...
