NEWS NUGGETS 🐓 A round-up of the most interesting DTC (and beyond) news from the past two weeks…RIP FigmaAdobe have acquired design tool, Figma, for a whopping $20b 🤯. Smart play from Adobe to take out one of their competitors. However, the design community isn’t as stoked as they believe Adobe is the place where technology goes to die - insert Magento. Although, some would argue Magento was already dead.I’m intrigued to see how this plays out. Will the sentiment amongst the design community actually translate into people cancelling their Figma subscriptions? She beat fellow Thatcherite, Rishi Sunak, by a slimmer margin than many were predicting (57.4 per cent to Sunak's 42.6 per cent). And so she takes the baton from outgoing Prime Minister, Bojo, and assumes leadership of the Tories with the country on the brink of a meltdown.And what is her plan to tackle said meltdown? Well. NEWS NUGGETS 🐓 Absolutely GorgiasCustomer service app, Gorgias, have raised $30m in a Series C (co-led by Shopify) to boost their valuation to within sight of unicorn status 🦄 (currently $700m). I think this is an interesting story on many fronts…First off, I’m seriously bullish when it comes to Customer Experience (CX) and if this investment can get more brands to consider their CX, especially from a post purchase perspective, I think it’s a win win. Secondly, how does this play out with Shopify? I get it from Shopify’s perspective: it’s better to focus on their core platform and buy (or invest) than build sub-par features (e.g. their email bolt on, which sucks). NEWS NUGGETS 🐓 A round-up of the most interesting DTC (and beyond) news from the past two weeks…Shopify LayoffsShopify announced it was laying off around 10% of its workforce with the cuts mainly impacting recruiting, support, sales and “over-specialized and duplicate roles”. The reasons seemed to be pretty simple. Shopify bet that there would be a permanent shift to eCommerce and hired accordingly. This bet didn’t payoff and therefore they had over-hired. I totally get that ambitious companies need to make bold predictions, and I also think there are major unforeseen externalities (war, inflation etc) at play here, but I do find it curious that what has happened (a return to all things IRL and therefore drop in online everything)...
